CONTRAST MATTERS

Crosswalk lighting design involves the assessment of multiple elements including roadway lighting and signalling, vehicle headlamps, pedestrian clothing, and visual background. All of these impact the key measure of luminance contrast, or the difference in brightness between an object and its background.

While negative contrast is dependent on having sufficient roadway lighting in the background, municipalities with busier lit environments prioritize positive contrast. Cyclone’s Crosswalk Optics deploy an asymmetrical light beam distribution to illuminate the pedestrian with enhanced positive contrast, greatly facilitating their detection by motorists.

Cyclone’s Crosswalk Optics offer an asymmetrical forward and asymmetrical right side light distribution making a pedestrian look brighter than his or her background.

VERTICAL ILLUMINANCE, BETTER VISIBILITY

In parallel with positive contrast, vertical illumination, or the amount of light that impinges on a vertical surface like a pedestrian, is a vital factor in pedestrian detection. Cyclone’s Crosswalk Optics deliver up to 2 to 3 times higher vertical illuminance than horizontal illuminance, at 5 feet from the ground across the roadway. This is the amount necessary for motorists to see pedestrians at crosswalks located mid-block under rural lighting conditions.

At the same time, the pedestrian crossing receives a high horizontal illuminance level, so that motorists see and recognize it from afar.

Enhanced vertical and horizontal illuminance with Cyclone’s Crosswalk Optics helps motorists clearly and effectively detect the crosswalk and the pedestrian in advance.

PERFORMANCE LENSING

While providing two to three times the intensity of standard street lighting, the Crosswalk optics are designed based on the guidance in IES RP-8.
